Introducing the Serial Infrared Adapter

The Serial Infrared Adapter provides with the flexibility, productivity, and ease of use features of a wireless connection between notebook computers and workstations, and notebook computers and computer peripherals supporting the Infrared Data Association  (IrDA) standard. This support is provided with the TranXit  software included in the Option package.

The Serial Infrared Adapter can function as a COM port, providing with additional communication capability for the computer. The Serial Infrared Adapter supports HP-SIR  as well as the Sharp ASK  protocol for Infrared communications when it is acting as a COM port. These protocols provide for communication speeds of 2400 bits-per-second up to 115.200 bps (115.2Kbps).

When you operate the Serial Infrared Adapter using the TranXit  software, the Serial Adapter will also support communication speeds of 288 Kbps / 576 Kbps and 1.152 Mbps.

Installing the PCMCIA Serial Infrared Adapter

NOTE: Be sure there is PCMCIA Card Socket Services 2.1 or higher installed. If you use a memory manage like EMM386.EXE be sure there does'nt exist a memory conflict.
  1.  Insert the Serial Infrared Adapter into the PCMCIA slot. (The computer does not need  to be powered off.)
  2.  Connect the transceiver to the Serial Infrared PCMCIA card.


Installing the ISA Serial Infrared Adapter

Before start install the Serial Infrared Adapter, you must know wich I/O and memory address and which interrupt (IRQ) you want the adapter to use.

  1.  Turn off the computer and remove its power cord.
  2.  Turn off all external devices connected to the computer.
  3.  Remove the Computer Cover.
  4.  Insert the Serial Infrared Adapter in an unused ISA slot.
  5.  Connect the transceiver to the Serial Infrared PCMCIA card.
  6.  Replace the computer cover and power plug and do a power on.


Installing the MC Serial Infrared Adapter

MC/A does not have SWITCHES, for Adapter installation use the same procedure as for ISA adapter. At Error statement 165 insert the Adapter Diskette and Update the Backup Reference Diskette 

Adjust the transceiver so that it is within range of, and angled towards, the hardware with which the computer will be communicating.

Using the Adapter as a COM Port

If you have the MicroChannel or ISA version of the Serial Infrared Adapter, you can use it to emulate a COM port for applications that use COM ports under DOS or Windows.
  1.  Start the IRMODE program
  2.  Select HP or Sharp mode
  3.  Start the APPLICATION, the adapter will be used as a normal COM port.


Diagnostics

The Diagnostics program IRDATEST.EXE  is contained on the Serial Infrared Adapter Diskette. Run this program if you are encountering problems. If you encounter a problem with an Serial Infrared MC Adapter, run first the MC Diagnostics program (Start with the Reference Diskette in drive A)
