Resetting User Passwords

If the power-on password is unknown, you may enter Setup mode to reset your passwords.  Your Compaq Presario computer provides two simple methods to enter Setup mode.

  • If you need to reset all passwords, you may utilize the password reset jumper inside your computer to boot directly into Maintenance Setup mode, where you may clear all passwords.
  • If you need to change a particular password, you may boot into Setup mode, then select the password to change.

To Reset All Passwords:

  1. Complete the preparation for disassembly procedures.
  2. Remove the side access panel.
  3. To disable the password, move the jumper bub1.jpg (5522 bytes) from pins 1-2 (normal) to pins 2-3 (maintenance).
  4. Turn on your computer.  Your computer will boot directly into Maintenance Setup Mode.
  5. Select "Clear All Passwords" from the Maintenance Setup Menu.
  6. You will receive verification that all passwords are cleared.
  7. Move the jumper bub1.jpg (5522 bytes) back from pins 2-3 (maintenance) to pins 1-2 (normal).
  8. Replace the side access panel.
  9. Turn on your computer.  All system passwords have now been reset.
