Abstract: NT FAILS TO INSTALL: MESSAGE "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

SYMPTOM:

When installing Windows NT 4.0 from CD, the following error message may occur after the first reboot during the installation process:

"Inaccessible_boot_device"

Note: This will occur if Novell NetWare 5.0 was previously installed on the boot drive.
Please note there may be other reasons for this error to occur not related to this tip.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

FIX:

The boot drive should be low level formatted before installing NT 4.0.

Note: Low level formatting the drive will delete and remove all data from the drive.

DETAILS:

Novell NetWare 5.0 utilizes DRDOS to create its DOS boot partition.
This leaves the boot partition incompatible with Windows NT 4.0.
