Abstract: NETFINITY ESCON: PROBLEMS WITH SERVICE PACK 4

TEXT:

If a Netfinity ESCON adapter, Type 9086, Model 001, is installed in your server, and you are using Communication Server for NT (CS/NT) or Microsoft SNA (Systems Network Architecture) Server (with Encryption enabled) as your Gateway Communication Server, be aware of the following:

IBM Communications Servers V5.0, V5.01, V6.0 and V6.01 for Windows NT currently does not support Service Pack 4 for Windows NT 4.0. A change in the Windows NT kernel is causing various components to fail.
Do not install Windows NT Service Pack 4.

Microsoft has been alerted to the problem and we are waiting for an official response.

Note: Microsoft SNA Server also has problems with Service Pack 4 when Encryption is enabled.

SYMPTOM:

When using a Netfinity ESCON Adapter, Type 9086, Model 001, and running Communication Server for NT, or Microsoft SNA Server version 4.0 with encryption "Enabled", various components may fail if Service Pack 4 is applied to Windows NT 4.0.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

a Netfinity 5000 server, Type 8659, any Model.
a Netfinity 5500 server, Type 8660, any Model.
a Netfinity 5500-M10 server, Type 8661, any Model.
a Netfinity 7000 server, Type 8651, any Model.
a Netfinity 7000-M10 server, Type 8680, any Model.

FIX:

  1.  If running with CS/NT -- DO NOT USE SP4.
  2.  If running SNA Server with Encryption -- DO NOT USE SP4.

Note: All other cases - SP4 should be installed.
