Abstract: SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN WHEN PCI CARD is REMOVED OR ADDED

TEXT:

System shuts down when PCI Card is removed or added.

SYMPTOMS:

System shuts down when hot adding or removing a PCI Card, especially in slot 3 or 5.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

WORKAROUND:

Remove the PCI card(s) by pulling directly upward and not at any angle.

DETAILS:

This problem presents itself because the metal bracket at the end of the card touches against
a two-pin jumper on the I/O Backplane and shorts out the power supply if the card is pulled out at an angle.
The system is not damaged by this short, but the power supply does remove all power until the short
is removed (i.e. the bracket is no longer causing a short).

NOTE: This issue should not arise if the plastic cover is left in place on the planar as it is shipped from the factory.
