Abstract: UNABLE TO START FIBRE ADAPTER CONFIGURATION PROGRAM

TEXT:

Unable to start Fibre Adapter configuration program

SYMPTOMS:

Error indicating that the Controller is not found when when Symbios Configuration program starts.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

WORKAROUND:

Requirements:

  1.  Computer that has terminal emulator application installed.

Note: If Windows NT is installed then probably Hyperterm is available.
(See Below if you have trouble issuing the break key)

  2.  a Null modem cable.

Procedure:

Only with the support from IBM levels 2, 3, or LSI should you even enter the Fibre controller via the serial console because some commands that can be issued from there can cause data loss.

-CAUTION- This procedure will cause the loss of all LUNs and Drive Configurations. Backup all data before proceeding.

This procedure is not to be used at any customers location that has data on any of the LUNs defined by the controller to be sysWipe'd.
Normal problem determination does not require that this procedure be done. This is only to be done under the advice of level 3 support or LSI support.

REPEAT Above procedure if a second controller is installed.

To do this for a second controller - connect it's serial port and follow the same procedure.

In other words, if the Second Fibre Module "B" is installed, connect to the second serial port and repeat the above steps.

DETAILS:

This problem occurs when the adapter or the drives attached to the adapter have a configuration that does not match the expected configuration.

The following is from the FAQ section from Hilgraeve (manufacturer of Hyperterm):

Q: How do I send a <Break> key?
A: Type <Ctrl><Break>. This didn't work in earlier releases running under NT 4.0.
It has been fixed in V3.0 and V4.0. Both versions also includes the ability to issue an
Interrupt Process command which is sometimes necessary when using Telnet.
That command is issued by <Alt><Break>
