Abstract: NETFINITY 5500: WINDOWS NT INSTALLATION FAILS, SYSTEM HALTED

SYMPTOM:

Installing Windows NT on Netfinity 5500 (8660) with Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter fails.
The Fibre Channel Host Bus adapter is installed on bus 0 with another PCI card installed on the same bus.

Problem not seen when Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter is on bus 1.

During the installation of Windows NT, mass storage devices are loaded and the system reboots. During the blue screen of Windows NT, the screen displays the following message: "Call your Hardware Vendor, system Halted" and the installation fails.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

"Call your Hardware Vendor, system Halted"

FIX:

Two possible fixes:

  1.  Press F6 during the "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware..." message.  Load driver(s) for Fibre Channel Host Bus adapter at this time. If this fails, use fix #2.
  2.  Install Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter Card and driver after Windows NT has been  completely installed.

DETAILS:

A number of drivers are loaded by default in order to be able to install from the CD without special driver diskettes. These drivers ask Windows NT for specific resources, and if no other driver has claimed them, will attempt their private detection methods. These drivers are ones that are submitted to Microsoft for inclusion on the CD. If the driver is loaded, it will claim its addresses. These private detection methods may try to talk to areas they do not own in incompatible ways.
