Abstract: NETFINITY 5500: BOOT MGR. APPEARS HUNG w/ NULL MODEM CONN.

SYMPTOM:

The System appears* hung at the Boot Manager screen.

* The System appears hung due to the fact that Boot Manager does not automatically boot to the highlighted Operating System after the normal 30 sec period (for user selection intervention). The System can be booted to a highlighted Operating System in Boot Manager but requires user input (pressing <enter>).

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

All of the following must be true for this TIP to apply:

FIX:

IBM is working to resolve this issue. At such time that a fix is available, it will be communicated.

WORKAROUND:

Select/highlight the Operating System of choice in Boot Manager (if not already highlighted), then press <enter> to engage booting that Operating System.

DETAILS:

When Boot Manager loads, it sends a ESC to the serial Port releasing the Port to allow the pending Operating System to take control of the Port.

The problem manifests itself by disabling the 30 second timer in Boot manager when the ESC is sent to the Port while connected to a remote terminal running a ASCII session.

With the Boot Manager timer disabled, The highlighted Operating System does not start after 30 seconds.
The user must press enter for the highlighted Operating System to start.
